Favorite Running Quotes:

1.

"Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.

Some call it euphoria. Others say it's a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into a elevated state of consciousness, a flash of joy.

A sense of floating as you run. This experience is unique to each of us, but when it happens, you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever. And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you."

~Nike Poster

2.           A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Lao-Tzu

You’ve no doubt heard this.  And you’ve probably recited it in your mind on a run or at the gym when you’re just beginning to get in shape.  You have a goal in sight and this quote brings you back to the current moment.

But the problem is that many runners forget all of the steps between the first one and the goal.  If your goal is to run under two hours for the half marathon then you need to be honest about all of the little steps to get to that goal.

…and what I’d rather see you do is to get the goal out of mind completely, but rather focus on the process, not the outcome. -Jay Johnson Process orientation, not outcome orientation.

You should have goals, but you should take it one step at a time.  And you should be honest about the fact that you don’t know how many steps it will take to get there. ~ Vernon Gambetta

3.  Human beings are made up of flesh, blood and a miracle fiber called COURAGE! ~ George Patton

4.   Find the courage to be patient.

My ankle was still sore, so I did 30 minutes on the stair climber (which personally I think is equal to running) and a 10 minute hill climb on the bike (level 20).

40 minutes on the stair climber and did 4.5 miles.  Felt good and was sweating like a banchee (do banchees sweat?).

My attitude going into this race was SO completely different than any other race I've ever done.  I'm usually a stress mess - I let the race get to my head and I psych myself out.  But this is why it was different:

1.  This is my first race since December 31 - Beat the New Year.

2.  I've been battling this stupid stress fracture since January 2010 and consequently haven't run a consecutive 3 miles (I usually have to walk a bit in between each mile to give my ankle a rest).

3.  I've never done a triathlon before.

4.  I felt like I really didn't "train" that hard for this race (these past few weeks I've been so preoccupied with getting a gazillion articles of clothing sewn).

I had an open house last night for all my children's clothing, but was able to get to bed by 9:00pm.  Oh....it was so nice to sleep!

I went and picked up the babysitter at 7:00am and Tim and I headed off to the Orem Rec Center.  Though it was warm, there was still a bit of chill in the air.

We dropped off our bikes in the transition area, picked up our race packets, timing chips and got our arms and legs numbered (that by far was the coolest part of doing a triathlon!  I felt totally official).

Photobucket

We went back to our bikes and I started watching all the "PRO'S" hang out by their gear.  I felt like such a fish out of water - I had NO idea what I was doing!

Photobucket

We went for a quick potty break (having to take off all the layers of clothes over a swim suit was a PAIN).

We took a quick spin on our bikes.  It felt good to warm up, but then I started to think how out of shape I really am!  How slow I am on a bike and what a terrible swimmer I was.

My main goal during the run was to help Tim run a consistent race.  But silly me, I didn't bring my Garmin and they didn't have mile markers.  I felt OK during the run, but I could feel that my lungs were sucking air.  Definitely need to bump up the miles.

As I rounded the corner to the finish...I kept thinking "I still have to bike and SWIM".  But quickly took off my shoes, put on my helmet and swore because Tim was already gone.  So I ran through the transition area and clipped into my peddles.

When I train on my bike, I am SLOW SLOW SLOW!  But today, I was a lot faster.  I consistently passed people.  We had to go up this GIANT hill on 400 south in Orem.  Though it was hard and I was really sucking air, but I didn't die and was able to recover quickly.  That was a real confidence booster.  We had to do the bike loop twice.

I quickly dismounted from the bike, threw my gear down and headed to the pool.  Running in a swim suit to not fun! That swim was the STINKEST thing I've ever done.  There were so many people in the lanes and I kept getting kicked and hit.  In the shallow end, I ran faster than I swam.  My goggles were constantly foggy and my contacts were getting messed up.  I just kept thinking, 5 more laps to go, 4 more laps to go....But then I was done.

Tim was at the finish with his parents. He finished 3 minutes ahead of me.  I'm so competitive, who cares if he is my hubby, it made me mad he beat me!  I told him it was "GO TIME" at the next tri!

We dried off and got dressed.  They had posted the results and I had to do a double check.  I placed 6th in my AG - but there were 3 of us that finished at 1:13:00, so if I would have been 2 seconds faster, I could have come in 4th!   Given my training for the past several months, I feel ok about the race (I can definitely run and bike faster).  I definitely want to do another tri!

I wanted to take it easy on the ankle this morning (even though it has been feeling really good), so I ran for 3-4 minutes on the TM while I waited the stair climber to open up.  The busted out 3.64 miles on that torture machine in 30 minutes.  Sometimes, I think it is harder than running.

I am hardly sore from Saturday and am definitely ready to run tomorrow!

4:55am always seems to come to flippin' early!  Plus, it was FREEZIN' this morning on the way to the gym.

Ankle feeling pretty good, so I decided to run today, but definitely going to do stair climber tomorrow to give it a rest.

(15 min run to 2 min walk) x 3 - slow slow slow (which I am ok with - the speed will come)

While waiting for a TM to open up, I biked for 10 minutes (so I counted that as a 1/2 mile) and actually ran for 3.5 miles.  I did so much walking today around Toronto and went to see Niagara Falls.  Brrrrrr......

Woke up at 4am Utah time to get my run in before rushing off to the airport.

My GPS in my rental car was programmed for the wrong airport.  That totally stressed me out - I had NO idea where I was going. Plus, driving in a foreign country (where lots of the signs were in French).

The customs lady was semi-nice, but the security lady swiped my little sewing nippers.  Urghhhh.....  Then I had to sit next to the biggest guy on the plane.  He took up half of my seat.

 Glad to be home!

Have you ever had a run where all the stars line up in the sky and complete utopia takes over.  That was today.  This is why:

1.  I ran up the canyon.  You can never go wrong by running up a canyon!

2.  It was cold, but not too cold.  Just right cold.

3.  I was with my ALL-TIME favorite running buddy.  My SIL - she is a rock star of a runner.  She had to go slower today because of me, but we had such a great conversation and have the unsaid rule that if you need to go...then go.  No hard feelings.

I haven't run this far yet since my injury.  My ankle is a bit tender, but nothing like in the past.  I will have tomorrow off and depending on how it feels Monday morning, I may do the stair climber.

I came home feeling so great - mentally and physically.  I really feel like I am progressing and moving forward.  This time, I think it is for-real!  I may start to think about races for 2011 (but I'm afraid I might jinx myself!).

My ankle is quite sore today after Saturday's run *sigh*.....So I hopped on the stair climber.  Not sure that was the best thing, but I got a fantastic workout!  That thing is so flippin hard....just like running!

Can I say brrrr.... Really..brrrrrr freezing! I got out of my car at 7:55am for the start time of 8:00am because it was so flippin' cold! 9 degrees mind you! I had on 4 shirts, 2 pairs of tights/windpants and it took me a 1.5 miles to start to feel my toes!

I really had a fun race. I had NO expectations other than I didn't want to come in last! I know my training isn't at top notch considering my recovering. I wasn't stressed out or psyched out! This whole "I just run what I run" attitude is awesome! I think I run so much better because I don't care as much!

I ran the race with my hubby (who is really starting to get fast...I'm gonna have to watch myself), my SIL and BIL. My SIL is SMOKIN' fast, so I really didn't plan on staying with her. She's been running lots and is in awesome shape.

Mile 1 (8:24) : I totally can't feel my toes. I decided to try to NOT look at my Garmin. I worried it would mess with my mind! But I looked at the mile markers and thought I started out WAY to fast. I was feeling good though. The mile markers were off from my Garmin distance.

Mile 2 (8:11): I looked at that time and thought I was going to blow up later on, but I still felt really good and was still running with my SIL.

Mile 3 (8:23): Looking forward to being done. My SIL took off and I just kept thinking to myself, "keep her in sight....keep her in sight".

Mile 4 (7:46): This is where my lack of fitness started to show. I had about 1/3 mile left to go and I thought I was going to puke. I kept thinking to myself, "just make it to the line and then puke...don't puke on yourself".

My SIL in was only 30 seconds ahead of me and hubby was only 2 minutes behind me! Such a fun race despite the cold! My kids ended up staying in the van, watched movies and ate donuts with Grandma. So I ate donuts on the way home and then really thought I would loose my cookies :) I was cold all morning long!
