Favorite Running Quotes:

1.

"Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.

Some call it euphoria. Others say it's a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into a elevated state of consciousness, a flash of joy.

A sense of floating as you run. This experience is unique to each of us, but when it happens, you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever. And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you."

~Nike Poster

2.           A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Lao-Tzu

You’ve no doubt heard this.  And you’ve probably recited it in your mind on a run or at the gym when you’re just beginning to get in shape.  You have a goal in sight and this quote brings you back to the current moment.

But the problem is that many runners forget all of the steps between the first one and the goal.  If your goal is to run under two hours for the half marathon then you need to be honest about all of the little steps to get to that goal.

…and what I’d rather see you do is to get the goal out of mind completely, but rather focus on the process, not the outcome. -Jay Johnson Process orientation, not outcome orientation.

You should have goals, but you should take it one step at a time.  And you should be honest about the fact that you don’t know how many steps it will take to get there. ~ Vernon Gambetta

3.  Human beings are made up of flesh, blood and a miracle fiber called COURAGE! ~ George Patton

4.   Find the courage to be patient.

Welcome to the blog. You have some fast 10k and half marathon times. I would expect your 5k time to be a little faster. But maybe that's because those times compare really close to my PR's, but I tend to slow down a lot over longer distances because I'm so heavy. Keep up the good work!

From TBarlow on Sat, Nov 28, 2009 at 21:23:05 from 216.194.124.36

Thanks for the warm welcome Burt. I'm hoping after a long "having kids" break my times will improve. Just keep pounding the pavement, right!

Nice job. Why is a farm loop your favorite? Aren't farms stinky?

From TBarlow on Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 15:29:10 from 216.194.124.36

That's funny! There is an old beautiful farm surrounded by fields. But it was too dark to enjoy today!

Best of luck to you with your goals. When are you gonna try that first marathon?

From TBarlow on Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 21:41:49 from 216.194.124.36

Life can get a bit noisy at our house! My first marathon is going to be Grandma's in Duluth, MN (my family has been running it for years). I hear it is a good course - we'll see in June!

From Nan Kennard on Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 22:20:59 from 174.51.250.151

Welcome to the blog! 5 year old triplets and a 2 year old. Um yeah, you ARE busy. Good job making some time for yourself and exercising!

I wanna do Gramdmas sometime too. I've heard its a good one.

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 22:44:26 from 71.219.71.229

Noise is a good thing most of the time, it is when it is quiet that you have to worry!!

I know nothing about that marathon, outside of Utah I am clueless. But I am sure it will be great and fun. Will more people in your family run it with you?

Hey Toby, (if that is your real name) you put a picture up. Who's the cutie?

From TBarlow on Fri, Dec 04, 2009 at 15:52:46 from 216.194.124.36

Yep - Toby it is (I know, most people think I'm a guy - sorry to disappoint :) ). I had to have my hubby help me with the picture (not computer savvy enough to compress a picture!!). That cutie is my oldest daughter - she is the oldest of my triplets. She always beats me in races around the house. She's speedy!

From Burt on Fri, Dec 04, 2009 at 16:39:01 from 12.231.112.98

I thought she looked a little old to be a two year old. Triplets must be fun...

From Kelli on Fri, Dec 04, 2009 at 17:46:35 from 71.219.71.229

She is a cutie! And so are you!!! Nice work out, it was pretty darn cold today.

Okay, my weight goal is 135 but I was stupid and started In November. I have been stuck between 140-143 for a year. I have broken 140 three times, the first two times it lasted for a day. The third time actually just happened this week. On Tuesday I weighed 139.9, Wednesday was 139.4, and Thursday was 138.5 (first time into the 138's sine I had my first child). I did not go to the gym today so I could not weigh myself BUT I ate like a horse at the RS dinner last night, so I am sure it would have been 141 or something. Tonight we have a high priest party (dang church stuff!!!) so I am praying the dessert is yucky and no one brings good appetizers. I am pretty sure I am in trouble.

Anyway, my point of that long story is that you are smarter than me,. Waiting is probably a good idea because the parties are frustrating me, I like food too much!! Come January, we can do this together!!! Although 130 may be a stretch for me, but a good goal to shoot for!!!

Too sleepy to get my hiney out of bed this morning ( I took a nap too today!!!).  Thankfully, hubby got home from work early and I was able to get my run in while the sun was still up (just barely).  I felt so much stronger and faster today than all week.  Maybe I just needed to burn off alittle "my kids are driving me crazy" steam.

Ever since about 10am there's been a steady drizzle here. It comes and goes, but now it's 10:30pm and the wind is blowing hard. Hopefully this is how it will be in the morning so I can say I'm getting some extreme weather, too. But I'm sure it won't be the same.

Ran on the treadmill at the gym. The best I've felt in 2 weeks - kept picking up speed the entire run.

I watched the most hilarious episode of "My Name is Earl" - I usually don't watch that show, but it had Napoleon Dynamite on it.  They were grocery baggers and went to a bagging competition.  Definitely made the time go by fast!

How do I kick my really gross habit of a Cherry Coke and Granny B's cookie everyday?   I love them so, but the calorie intake is ......out of control......

1 degree outside -- oooooo.....that is cold!

I want to start doing some speed work next week and I'm thinking I will be on the tread mill.  I've never done speed on the Milly, so with that being said, here's my dumb question:  do you hop off the TM after each 400/800/etc or do you just slow down the speed?

I'm braving the chilliness tomorrow and heading outside for a long run.  I hope I don't get hypothermia

From Kelli on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 19:05:19 from 71.219.95.151

You should come and meet us at the Jordan River Parkway for a nice long COLD 20 miler tomorrow!!!

My advice is to slow the treadmill down. When I do the speed work on a track, I jog the same amount of time in between each 400/800. So, if the 400 takes a minute, jog for a minute before starting the next one. On the treadmill, I do not really pay attention that well, I just jog until I feel recovered. GOOD LUCK!!! Treadmills are good for speedwork, it is easy to control and track if you have focus (which I lack!!!)

From TBarlow on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 22:41:28 from 216.194.124.36

Kelli-

Thanks for the treadmill speedwork advice - next week baby!

I would love to run with you guys, but I'm still a few weeks out for a 20 miler. Plus, you guys are fast - I need to power up my double engines first before I can run with ya'll :)

Back to your trainer comment - do you go to a rec center or a golds/24 hour fitness? I go to Golds and their trainers were outrageously expensive (maybe I need to check it out again, it has been awhile). I'm jealous - I totally want one!

From TBarlow on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 22:48:29 from 216.194.124.36

Kelli-

By the way, what are you training for in that you are doing 20 miles tomorrow?

From Kelli on Sat, Dec 12, 2009 at 01:18:17 from 71.219.95.151

You would be just fine with us, I promise. It will be nice and easy. I am not sure we will really run 20, we will see how the weather cooperates. The trail is perfect, you park in the middle, run 5 miles north and then back to the car, then 5 miles south and back. It makes it so anyone can come and join in and do how ever many miles they want. We will catch you another time!

I just go to a little local gym. They trainer used to charge more, but times have changed! I am sure at a big gym it is probably still pricey!

I am running the Boston marathon, but that is about it and I am not really training for it. I am just ramping my mileage up but at a slower pace----the best for WEIGHT LOSS!!!!! I have 2.5 pounds to go this month, then hopefully another 5 in January. Then I will weigh what I did in high school. Not sure I can do it, but I am trying!!!

Holy smokes - it was such a beautiful run this morning!  We had about 3-4 inches of fresh powder and the temperature was much warmer (20 degrees).  I don't understand why people want to drive SO close to the edge of the road.  I totally got splashed with yucky, dirty snow.  But it was well worth it once I hit the trail.

I definitely ran slow - I felt like I was dragging snow the whole way.  I am sore this evening - it was so much harder than a regular treadmill or no snow day.  I will sleep well tonight!

I had a hard time getting moving, but finally got my 6 miles in on the tread mill.  One thing I hate about the treadmill (besides the fact I'm running in place) is that I sweat SO much.  I totally soaked through a towel today.  Urghhhh.... yuck!

I took a long nap this afternoon and finally feel human again.

I think I am taking tomorrow off - my hubby will be at the temple before work, I'm swaping babysitting with a neighbor, helping in my triplets class, and dance recital after school.  I'm ok with taking a day off, finally got some drugs for my sinus infection.  Plus, I'll be able to sleep in!

I wasn't able to run until right before dinner (I was a sleepy head the morning).  I got a new pair of shoes today and I felt like I was floating on air (now I need to figure out how to use the shoe tracker).

I had 2 bad parts to my run:

 1.  I ran through a HUGE puddle (it was dark and I couldn't see well) and got my brand new shoes wet.

2.  I leave my water bottle under a street light at the end of the cul-de-sac.  Some neighborhood punk swiped it.  It was my favorite water bottle!

My splits were:

1.1 mile - 10.34 minutes

.8 mile - 7 minutes

1 mile - 8 mimnutes

.9 mile - 7 minutes

I slept in this morning because I knew my hubby was coming home early from work - it was fantastic and I felt human all day (verses feeling like a tired zombie)!

I wasn't that excited to run 8 miles on the treadmill, but I found a good show and lost rack of time.  I looked down at the mileage and it said 4.5 miles - time was flying (average pace 9.20)!  I stop to get some water then sped up.

I was feeling so great and continued to pick up speed.  That mental high can be so empowering!  I ended up running my last mile in 7:44.  I even lost 2 pounds during the run (but I did come home to eat pizza, so it didn't last :)  ).

Hubby and I are going to the gym together (a far and few between event) and bringing the kids to the daycare.  We have lots of 5-year old Christmas cheer at our house!
