Favorite Running Quotes:

1.

"Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.

Some call it euphoria. Others say it's a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into a elevated state of consciousness, a flash of joy.

A sense of floating as you run. This experience is unique to each of us, but when it happens, you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever. And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you."

~Nike Poster

2.           A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Lao-Tzu

You’ve no doubt heard this.  And you’ve probably recited it in your mind on a run or at the gym when you’re just beginning to get in shape.  You have a goal in sight and this quote brings you back to the current moment.

But the problem is that many runners forget all of the steps between the first one and the goal.  If your goal is to run under two hours for the half marathon then you need to be honest about all of the little steps to get to that goal.

…and what I’d rather see you do is to get the goal out of mind completely, but rather focus on the process, not the outcome. -Jay Johnson Process orientation, not outcome orientation.

You should have goals, but you should take it one step at a time.  And you should be honest about the fact that you don’t know how many steps it will take to get there. ~ Vernon Gambetta

Audrey was suppose to meet me this morning, but she texted and said she was out.  Well, at least I could go a little faster.  I was pleased with the mile 5 split because that has a lot of uphill in it!

I've been researching some new winter gear.  I need it for running and skiing.  I wore some Paradox tights today, but they were really short on my long legs.  They did keep me warm.  I also wore my outershell/rain jacket.  I was roasty toasty this morning.  Score!  I found one good outfit!

We are going skiing for the first time this season so I will be able to try it out on the slopes. Skiing all day Saturday is fun, but I don't get anything else done and it does cut into my workout time.  BUT it is a good workout! Come on rain....keep on coming!

I have been really happy with GORE running wear. It is pretty expensive, but works great and keeps the wind off. What I have found is I need 2-3 different types of jackets/tights depending on conditions. If it is really cold and windy I'll use the Gore windstopper. If it is just cold I can get away with a long sleeve and a light running jacket. The key is you want your gear to be breathable. If you are wearing clothes that whick and breath all you need to do is layer and you're fine. It will only take you a few times to figure out what works best for you.

Also, RE tights: Most brands use the exact same materials for your standard tights. The difference usually is how thick they are. I have 3 pairs of tights. One that is really thin, one thicker and one in between. I wear the thick ones when it is really cold and the thinner ones when it isn't quite as bad.

nice run this morning -- strong finish!

if either of you have recommendations for a good pair of gloves, i would love to hear it.

Scott - this is excellent information!! Thank you! I may bug you again for gear advice!!

I'm thinking I want a softshell jacket with a hood. Do your jackets have hoods? My ski jacket from college doesn't have one and I hate it. I'm thinking the same would be true with a running jacket. Keep the wind/ snow out of my face and from blowing down my neck.

As far as gloves, I wore a thin liner glove (usually, I put them in my heavy ski gloves). I guess my hands get really hot/or it wasn't that cold because I took them off tight away.

Thanks again for the insights!!

Hit me up anytime. Most soft shells don't have hoods. When I am not running, but just playing in the cold I will wear the following:

base layer shirt

Soft shell (the Gore one works great)

Windstopper fleece vest or jacket- They zip up and cover most of my neck.

Ski shell or coat. Also zips up to cover my neck.

Windstopper fleece hat

Gore-tex pants and if it is really cold I put on tights under them.

Something like that will keep you warm in most situations.

I have found that with layering with the right fabrics you can stay warm and comfy most of the time.
